The Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) will be reviewing its rebate program for conversion of grass yards to xeriscape (water efficient landscaping) at the end of the year, when the current program expires. Currently the program rebates $2 per square foot of grass replaced for the first 1500 square feet and $1 per square foot in excess of 1500 square feet.
The program originated in 1999, when SNWA offered 40 cents per square foot. This was increased to $1 in 2004 and $2 in 2006. Studies have shown that converting grass areas can reduce water use by as much as 75 percent. Maintenance time and costs are also reduced.
