Survey Shows People Prefer Rethinking Growth

A survey done by Smart Growth America and the National Association of Realtors indicates that people want developers and local government to make their communities less dependent on cars by changing land use and putting resources into public transportation. More than 80 percent said they favor building communities so that people can walk more and almost 90 percent favor providing public transportation, including rail and buses. 75 percent said the cure for increasing traffic problems is not more roads, but walkable communities and more transit choices. More than 80 percent prefer creating walkable communities by redeveloping existing areas rather than building new.
