The Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) has revised its rebate program for the conversion of grass to water efficient landscaping. Qualifying residents and businesses will now receive $1.50 for each square foot of grass they replace no matter the size of the conversion. In 2007, SNWA offered $2.00 per square foot of turf converted, up to 1,500 square feet, and $1.00 for each additional square foot. This program started in 1999. Since then more than 96 million square feet of grass has been converted to water smart landscaping, saving more than 18 billion gallons of water. This occurred despite the addition of 330,000 new residents and about 40 million annual visitors. Other incentive programs offered by SNWA offer rebates for pool covers, “smart” irrigation controllers that automatically adjust watering schedule and rain sensors that shut down irrigation systems during and after rainstorms.
